Cosmetic Injectables (Botox & Fillers)

As we grow older our skin loses its firmness and elasticity as it produces less and less collagen and elastin. With aging, we also lose volume in the lips and face. Botox contains purified bacteria that temporarily freezes muscles. This helps in reducing excessive sweating and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions. 

Dermal fillers are made with ingredients that add volume and fullness to areas that have thinned or lost volume due to aging. The thinning mostly happens in the cheeks, lips and around the mouth. 

Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles caused by muscle movement – which are often called expression lines and appear on the upper face. They include: 

• The horizontal lines on the forehead
• The ‘11’ between the brows
• Crow’s feet around the eyes

These lines are caused by facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, and squinting among others. However, Botox does not treat wrinkles and fine lines caused by sagging or loss of plumpness in the facial area otherwise known as static wrinkles. These include lines in the neck, cheeks, and jowl areas. 

Different types of dermal fillers are designed to treat varying signs of aging such as: 

• Enhance shallow contours on the face
• Plump thin lips
• Diminish or minimize the wrinkles or shadow under the eye that is caused by the lower eyelid
• Soften the appearance of recessed scars
• Soften the appearance of static wrinkles especially on the lower face

The ideal candidate for cosmetic injectables is: 

• An individual seeking an enhanced appearance with fewer wrinkles,
• Must be in good health
• Realistic
• Not pregnant or nursing
• Non-smoker

 The Procedure 

Cosmetic injectables treatments are usually done by a qualified experienced and licensed provider. The procedure takes about 20 minutes or less for Botox and 30-40 minutes for dermal fillers depending on the area being treated. 

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin obtained from bacteria. Although it is deadly in larger amounts, tiny regulated amounts can be used to temporarily correct wrinkles and excess sweating (hyperhidrosis). Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles in the treatment area, temporarily paralyzing them hence reducing their movement. This can lead to minimal or no sweating in cases of hyperhidrosis and with wrinkles softened, reduced, or even diminished. 

Dermal fillers are designed to be injected beneath the skin’s surface to add volume and fullness. There are several types of dermal fillers, with each designed to treat different signs of aging and other cosmetic concerns. 

Botox and dermal fillers can be used alongside each other depending on the area being treated. You may be advised to wait for about two weeks to see the effects of Botox before dermal fillers are administered in the same area. 

Regular treatments are needed to maintain the results. 

Recovery and Results 

There is usually no downtime associated with cosmetic injectables. You might feel sore for some hours but that goes away quickly. Botox results can take about 3 days or a week to be seen while filler results are immediate.

The effects of Botox can last between three to four months while those of dermal fillers tend to vary due to the type of filler used and the treatment area. Some fillers last about 6 months while others can last up to 2 years.
